letter <strong>\u03a5<\/strong><strong> (Upsilon)<\/strong> is one of the most influential letters in the history of European languages, even though its presence today is often <strong>hidden<\/strong>.<\/p><ol><li><strong> From Greek <\/strong><strong>\u03a5<\/strong><strong> to Latin and English<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><ul><li>Ancient Greek <strong>\u03a5<\/strong> was pronounced like the <strong>French \u201cu\u201d<\/strong> (a front, rounded vowel).<\/li><li>Latin <strong>did not originally have this sound<\/strong>.<\/li><li>When Romans encountered Greek words, they <strong>borrowed <\/strong><strong>\u03a5<\/strong><strong> as Y<\/strong> to approximate the sound.<\/li><li>English inherited <strong>Y<\/strong> mainly through <strong>Greek \u2192 Latin \u2192 French<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><p>So when you see <strong>Y<\/strong> in English, very often you are looking at a <strong>Greek guest<\/strong>.<\/p><ol start=\"2\"><li><strong> What <\/strong><strong>\u03a5<\/strong><strong> does in English (three roles)<\/strong><\/li><li><strong> As a vowel (the most Greek role)<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>In words of Greek origin, <strong>Y often carries the old <\/strong><strong>\u03a5<\/strong><strong> sound<\/strong>:<\/p><ul><li><strong>myth<\/strong> \u2190 \u03bc\u1fe6\u03b8\u03bf\u03c2<\/li><li><strong>system<\/strong> \u2190 \u03c3\u03cd\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/li><li><strong>rhythm<\/strong> \u2190 \u1fe5\u03c5\u03b8\u03bc\u03cc\u03c2<\/li><li><strong>symbol<\/strong> \u2190 \u03c3\u03cd\u03bc\u03b2\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd<\/li><li><strong>analysis<\/strong> \u2190 \u1f00\u03bd\u03ac\u03bb\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/li><\/ul><p>Here, <strong>Y behaves like a vowel<\/strong>, not a consonant \u2014 exactly as \u03a5 does in Greek.<\/p><ol><li><strong> As a consonant (later development)<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>English also uses <strong>Y<\/strong> as a
