\r\n Quantum leap<\/em>
\r\n Greek: \u039a\u03b2\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc \u03ac\u03bb\u03bc\u03b1 or \u03ba\u03b2\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\u03b2\u03b1\u03c3\u03b7\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n In everyday language, a \u201cquantum leap\u201d means an enormous\r\n advance. In Physics, however, the leap is not necessarily\r\n large.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n It is discrete<\/strong>: a transition between\r\n two allowed quantum states.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n In an atom, an electron does not orbit the nucleus like\r\n a tiny planet. It is described by a quantum state and may\r\n possess only certain allowed values of energy.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n When the atom absorbs the appropriate amount of energy,\r\n it may make a transition to a higher energy state.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n When it moves to a lower one, it may emit a photon.\r\n The photon\u2019s energy corresponds exactly to the difference\r\n between the two energy levels.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n The electron, therefore, does not disappear from one\r\n circular orbit and magically reappear in another.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Nor does the \u201cleap\u201d mean that nature steps outside time.\r\n It means that the initial and final energy states are\r\n discrete: there is no allowed stationary state at just\r\n any intermediate energy.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n \r\n The image is a symbolic rather than a literal\r\n representation of a quantum transition.\r\n <\/em>\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n For the Teenagers of the World \u2014 and of the Soul\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Some changes appear sudden: a decision, a discovery,\r\n the moment when you realise that you are no longer\r\n the person you once were.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n That does not mean they required no time. They were often\r\n being prepared silently within you, like a system receiving\r\n energy until a new state becomes possible.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Physics does not promise that we can change our lives\r\n through a magical quantum leap.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n It does, however, offer us a powerful image: change does\r\n not always have to leave a visible trace on every\r\n intermediate step.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n Keep this in mind:<\/strong>\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n A quantum leap is not remarkable because it crosses\r\n a great distance.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n It is remarkable because it connects two allowed states\r\n without inhabiting an intermediate stationary state.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n The Pythagorean tradition searched for number, proportion\r\n and harmony behind the visible world.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Quantum Physics is not a fulfilment of Pythagorean thought.\r\n It does, however, show us that nature does not always permit\r\n every conceivable value: the possible states are determined\r\n by precise mathematical relationships.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n For the Pythagoreans, harmony arose from definite\r\n proportions.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n In Quantum Physics, energy transitions obey definite\r\n differences.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n They are not the same knowledge. They are two different\r\n paths inviting us to seek the order behind appearances.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n Change may appear as a leap.
\r\n Its possibility, however, has its own unseen preparation.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n The Poetic Bridge\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n A quantum leap does not explain how a human being changes.\r\n Human development does not obey the energy levels of\r\n an electron.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n We may, however, borrow a powerful image from a quantum\r\n transition:\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Not every preparation leaves a visible trace.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n A decision may appear sudden.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Understanding may arrive in a single moment.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n One day, a person may say,\r\n \u201cI am no longer who I used to be.\u201d\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Yet that moment was rarely born on its own. It may have\r\n been preceded by questions, failures, small actions and\r\n quiet inner work that no one could yet see.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n That is why we should not dismiss the periods during which\r\n nothing appears to be changing.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n Not all gradual progress is visible.
