\r\n Quantum entanglement<\/em>

\r\n\r\n

\r\n Imagine two photons created in such a way that Quantum\r\n Physics cannot fully describe each one separately.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n It describes the pair as a single quantum system.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n This is called quantum entanglement<\/strong>.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n Entanglement does not mean that one photon feels what\r\n is happening to the other.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n There is no hidden thread, telepathy or secret signal\r\n travelling between them.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n It means that, when we perform measurements on the two\r\n parts of the pair, the results display correlations that\r\n classical physics cannot explain through pre-existing\r\n local \u201chidden instructions.\u201d\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n How Does It Work?\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Suppose that two entangled photons move apart. Each\r\n individual measurement result is unpredictable.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n When, however, we later compare many results from both\r\n sides, the quantum pattern of correlations appears.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n Measuring one photon does not allow us to choose the\r\n result obtained from the other.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Entanglement therefore cannot be used to send a message\r\n faster than light.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n To recognise the correlations, the two observers must\r\n compare their data through an ordinary means of\r\n communication, which obeys the speed-of-light limit.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Distance may separate the particles without necessarily\r\n erasing their correlations.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Entanglement, however, is not necessarily eternal.\r\n Uncontrolled interactions with the environment may weaken\r\n or destroy it.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n \r\n The luminous line in the image is a poetic symbol.\r\n It does not represent a real thread or signal between\r\n the photons.\r\n <\/em>\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n Keep this in mind:<\/strong>\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n In entanglement, the parts of a quantum system may not\r\n possess complete, independent descriptions. The fullest\r\n description belongs to the whole.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n This does not abolish distance.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n It does not violate the speed of light.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n It does, however, reveal that quantum correlations are\r\n deeper than our classical intuition allows.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n The Orphic Bridge\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n The Orphic imagination sees the many forms of life\r\n emerging within a single sacred cosmos.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Quantum Entanglement does not prove this worldview,\r\n nor did the Orphic tradition anticipate Quantum Physics.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n We may, however, allow the two voices to meet poetically\r\n \u2014 without confusing them:\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n One speaks of a universe in which the parts acquire\r\n meaning through the whole.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n The other sings of a world in which no existence\r\n is devoid of relationship.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n The Poetic Bridge\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Quantum entanglement does not prove that human\r\n relationships are quantum phenomena.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n It does not explain love, confirm telepathy or allow\r\n two people to exchange secret messages across a distance.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n We may, however, borrow a clear image from it:\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n Some truths do not belong entirely to either part\r\n in isolation. They belong to the relationship between them.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n A friendship does not exist in one friend alone\r\n or in the other.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n A dialogue belongs exclusively to neither of its two voices.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n A melody played by two instruments is not contained\r\n in its entirety within either one.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n To understand what happens between two people, it is not\r\n always enough to examine each person separately.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n We must also notice the pattern they create together:\r\n what they offer, what they receive and how each changes\r\n in the presence of the other.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n A relationship does not abolish individuality.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n It does, however, remind us that some things belong\r\n to one person, some to the other \u2014 and some are born\r\n only in the space between them.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
