class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            In everyday thought, if two descriptions appear to be\r\n            opposed, we assume that one must be right and the other wrong.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-atom\"><\/i>\r\n            Quantum Physics compels us to think differently.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            A quantum object, such as a photon or an electron, is not\r\n            a classical particle that occasionally transforms into a wave.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Depending on the experimental arrangement, it may display\r\n            particle-like or wave-like properties.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-point\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-circle\"><\/i>\r\n            In one experiment we record localised arrivals \u2014\r\n            a characteristic reminiscent of particles.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-point\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-wave-square\"><\/i>\r\n            In another we observe interference \u2014 a characteristic\r\n            reminiscent of waves.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-adjust\"><\/i>\r\n            Niels Bohr called these descriptions\r\n            <strong>complementary<\/strong>.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-question-circle\"><\/i>\r\n            What Does Complementarity Mean?\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Different experimental arrangements may reveal different\r\n            aspects of the same quantum phenomenon.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            These aspects are not two complete pictures that we can\r\n            simply place one on top of the other.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The conditions that allow one aspect to appear fully may\r\n            prevent the other from appearing fully.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            In the double-slit experiment, for example:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <ul>\r\n            <li>\r\n                An arrangement that keeps the two possible paths\r\n                indistinguishable allows interference to appear.\r\n            <\/li>\r\n            <li>\r\n                An arrangement that records which slit the quantum\r\n                object passed through provides path information but\r\n                reduces or eliminates the interference.\r\n            <\/li>\r\n        <\/ul>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-point\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-lightbulb\"><\/i>\r\n            One picture does not arbitrarily \u201ccancel\u201d the other.\r\n            Each is connected with a different, incompatible\r\n            experimental question.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            <em>\r\n                The image uses the point and the wave as classical\r\n                symbols of two complementary descriptions. It does\r\n                not suggest that a tiny particle and a material wave\r\n                literally coexist within the circle.\r\n            <\/em>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-point\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-brain\"><\/i>\r\n            <strong>Keep this in mind:<\/strong>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Neither classical picture can fully describe the quantum\r\n            object on its own.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            We do not choose which reality we prefer.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-flask\"><\/i>\r\n            We choose which experiment to perform \u2014 and the experiment\r\n            determines which aspect may be revealed.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-landmark\"><\/i>\r\n            Echo from the Ancients\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Aristotle preserves a thought that he attributes\r\n            to Heraclitus:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-quote-left\"><\/i>\r\n            <em>\r\n                \u201cWhat opposes brings together, and from things\r\n                that differ comes the most beautiful harmony.\u201d\r\n            <\/em>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Heraclitus was not speaking about quantum complementarity,\r\n            and Bohr did not prove the philosophy of Heraclitus.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The two ideas meet only in a careful philosophical analogy:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Completeness does not always require us to eliminate\r\n            difference.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-balance-scale\"><\/i>\r\n            It may require us to understand why we need more\r\n            than one aspect.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-pencil-alt\"><\/i>\r\n            Thought Exercise\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Can you recognise within yourself two qualities that\r\n            appear opposed but serve different circumstances?\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            You may be cautious and courageous.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Rational and emotional.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Independent and deeply connected to others.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-point\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-exclamation-circle\"><\/i>\r\n            This is a human metaphor \u2014 not an application of\r\n            Quantum Physics to psychology.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Complementarity does not teach us who we ought to be.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            It teaches us how careful we must be before dismissing\r\n            as a contradiction two truths born from different questions.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-link\"><\/i>\r\n            The Poetic Bridge\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Quantum complementarity is not a theory of human personality.\r\n            Nor does it mean that two conflicting claims are always\r\n            equally true.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            It does, however, offer us a deeply human image:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-eye\"><\/i>\r\n            A single aspect is not always enough to reveal\r\n            the whole truth.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            A person may be strong and vulnerable at the same time.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            They may need solitude and still long for companionship.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            They may think with rigorous logic and feel deeply.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            One aspect does not necessarily cancel out the other.\r\n            Each may appear under different circumstances, and together\r\n            they may form a fuller picture.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            So, before defining someone by a single moment, it may\r\n            be worth remembering:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-feather-alt\"><\/i>\r\n            What we see may be true \u2014 without being the whole truth.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Some truths do not compete with one another.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-lightbulb\"><\/i>\r\n            Each illuminates the space that the other cannot\r\n            reveal alone.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n
