Stars, atoms, light,\r\n            matter and empty space seem to belong to different worlds.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Physics, however, searches beneath this diversity for\r\n            the fewest and deepest possible laws.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-network-wired\"><\/i>\r\n            This is the idea of <strong>unification<\/strong>:\r\n            phenomena that appear different may be manifestations\r\n            of a common underlying structure.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-check-circle\"><\/i>\r\n            A Unification That Succeeded\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Electricity and magnetism were once regarded as two\r\n            independent phenomena.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            In the nineteenth century, James Clerk Maxwell showed\r\n            that they are aspects of a single electromagnetic force.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-point\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-lightbulb\"><\/i>\r\n            Light was revealed to be an electromagnetic wave.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            In the twentieth century, the electromagnetic and weak\r\n            nuclear forces were described within one common theory:\r\n            <strong>electroweak theory<\/strong>.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Its predictions were experimentally confirmed, notably\r\n            through the discovery of the W and Z particles.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-atom\"><\/i>\r\n            Two forces that appear entirely different at ordinary\r\n            energies reveal their kinship at higher ones.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-project-diagram\"><\/i>\r\n            What Has Been Unified \u2014 and What Has Not\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The Standard Model of particle physics provides quantum\r\n            descriptions of:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <ul>\r\n            <li>The electromagnetic force,<\/li>\r\n            <li>the weak nuclear force,<\/li>\r\n            <li>and the strong nuclear force.<\/li>\r\n        <\/ul>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The electromagnetic and weak forces have been unified\r\n            within a single electroweak description.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The strong force is also included in the Standard Model,\r\n            but it has not been demonstrated to join them as one\r\n            unique, experimentally confirmed force.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Gravity is described with extraordinary success by\r\n            General Relativity, but not yet by a complete and\r\n            experimentally confirmed quantum theory.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-point\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-flask\"><\/i>\r\n            Proposed <strong>Grand Unified Theories<\/strong> attempt\r\n            to connect the electromagnetic, weak and strong forces.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            <strong>Quantum gravity<\/strong> seeks a consistent meeting\r\n            between Quantum Physics and gravity.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-exclamation-circle\"><\/i>\r\n            No complete \u201cTheory of Everything\u201d has yet been\r\n            experimentally confirmed.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            <em>\r\n                The image symbolises the search for common relationships\r\n                beneath many phenomena. The luminous lines do not depict\r\n                an already discovered unified field.\r\n            <\/em>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-point\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-brain\"><\/i>\r\n            <strong>Keep this in mind:<\/strong>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Unification is not the belief that \u201ceverything is connected\u201d\r\n            in some mysterious way.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            It is a rigorous scientific programme: different phenomena\r\n            must emerge from the same mathematical framework, and that\r\n            framework\u2019s new predictions must survive experimental testing.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The beauty of a theory may lead us towards a hypothesis.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-balance-scale\"><\/i>\r\n            Only experiment can allow it to be called Physics.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-landmark\"><\/i>\r\n            Echo from the Ancients\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The earliest Greek philosophers searched for the\r\n            <strong>arch\u0113<\/strong>: that from which the multiplicity\r\n            of the world arises and through which it may be understood.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            They were not searching for the Standard Model, nor did\r\n            they know about quantum fields.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            They did, however, ask one of the longest-lived questions\r\n            in human thought:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-question-circle\"><\/i>\r\n            Might something unified lie behind the many?\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Modern Physics does not answer through myth or intuition.\r\n            It answers through mathematics, accelerators, detectors\r\n            and results that must be repeatable.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The One has not yet been found.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            But the search for it has already united phenomena that\r\n            we once believed to be foreign to one another.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Every great unification begins when someone looks at\r\n            two different worlds and dares to ask:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-lightbulb\"><\/i>\r\n            \u201cWhat if they obey the same law?\u201d\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-link\"><\/i>\r\n            The Poetic Bridge\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The search for quantum unification does not prove that\r\n            every event in human life follows a hidden plan.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Nor does it promise that every contradiction will\r\n            be resolved.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            It does, however, offer us a courageous image of knowledge:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-puzzle-piece\"><\/i>\r\n            Sometimes we possess remarkable explanations for different\r\n            parts of reality, yet still do not know how they fit together.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The same may happen when we try to understand a life.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            We carry memories, choices, losses, desires and changes\r\n            that do not immediately form a clear narrative.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            We need not hastily invent a false unity merely to\r\n            feel secure.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            We can search for coherence without distorting what\r\n            does not yet fit.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            We can hold the pieces patiently.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            We can allow unanswered questions to remain honestly\r\n            unanswered.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            For maturity of thought lies not only in the answers\r\n            we have found.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-feather-alt\"><\/i>\r\n            It also lies in the courage with which we stand before\r\n            what we have not yet managed to bring together.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            <small>\r\n                <strong>Scientific reference:<\/strong>\r\n
