\r\n The soul is one of humanity\u2019s oldest and deepest questions.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n What is it that feels?\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n What is it that remembers, desires and loves?\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n How does personal experience arise from the matter\r\n of the body?\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n And does anything of us survive when the body ceases\r\n to function?\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Physics can study matter, energy and their interactions.\r\n Neuroscience can investigate the workings of the brain\r\n and connect particular neural processes with perception,\r\n memory and conscious experience.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n No confirmed scientific theory, however, has demonstrated\r\n the existence of an independent\r\n \u201cquantum soul.\u201d<\/strong>\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n Since the Brain Is Made of Atoms, Is It Not Quantum?\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n At the fundamental level, every material body consists\r\n of particles and fields governed by Quantum Physics.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n This is true of a brain, a tree, a rock and a star.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n It does not follow, however, that every function of these\r\n complex bodies requires a special quantum explanation.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Water consists of quantum molecules, but we do not need\r\n to calculate the wavefunction of every molecule in order\r\n to describe a wave in the sea.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n Different scales give rise to different levels\r\n of description.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n Quantum Biology and Quantum Consciousness\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n There are biological processes in which quantum phenomena\r\n may play an essential role \u2014 such as tunnelling in certain\r\n molecular reactions and mechanisms studied in photosynthesis\r\n or in the navigation of certain animals.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n This field is called quantum biology<\/strong>.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n It is not, however, evidence that consciousness is a\r\n quantum phenomenon or that the soul can leave the body\r\n and survive as quantum information.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Theories have been proposed that connect quantum coherence,\r\n wavefunction collapse or structures within neurons\r\n with consciousness.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n These proposals remain hypotheses: they have not been\r\n established through repeatable experimental evidence\r\n as an accepted explanation of consciousness.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n What Can Science Say About the Soul?\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Science investigates claims that can lead to measurable\r\n and testable predictions.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n When the soul is defined as an immaterial or posthumous\r\n existence, it is a metaphysical, philosophical or\r\n theological concept.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Under that definition, it is not a particle or field\r\n that present-day Physics can detect.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n This is not scientific proof that the soul does not exist.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n It means that science currently possesses no confirmed\r\n evidence with which to describe it as a quantum object.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n Honesty requires us to leave the question open where\r\n the evidence ends.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n \r\n The image is a poetic rather than a scientific\r\n representation. The luminous human figure does not\r\n depict a detected quantum field or a soul observed\r\n leaving the body.\r\n <\/em>\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n Keep this in mind:<\/strong>\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n The word \u201cquantum\u201d does not turn a mystery into\r\n a scientific explanation.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Quantum Physics may be strange, but it is not a licence\r\n for every imaginable claim.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Every scientific proposal requires a clear mechanism,\r\n a mathematical formulation, testable predictions and\r\n experimental evidence.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n Echo from the Ancients\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n From an early period, the Greek word\r\n psych\u0113<\/strong> was associated with breath and life.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n In poetry, philosophy and religious thought, it acquired\r\n many meanings: the breath of life, the inner self,\r\n the bearer of consciousness, the principle of life\r\n or an immortal existence.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n The ancient Greeks did not offer one shared answer.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Homer, the Orphics, Plato, Aristotle and the Epicureans\r\n did not speak about the soul in the same way.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n This plurality is not a weakness. It bears witness\r\n to the difficulty and depth of the question.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Physics investigates what the world is made of\r\n and how it changes.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Neuroscience investigates how the brain functions.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Philosophy asks what it means to experience,\r\n to know and to be.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Perhaps the true wonder lies not in an easy answer,\r\n but in our very capacity to ask:\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n What is consciousness?\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n How does the sense of self arise?\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n And who is it that experiences, remembers and asks?\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n Science continues to investigate these questions.\r\n Philosophy examines them from its own perspective.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n <\/i>\r\n Neither needs to appropriate the voice of the other.\r\n <\/p>\r\n\r\n
