The waves would meet:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <ul>\r\n            <li>\r\n                Where they arrived in phase, they would reinforce\r\n                one another.\r\n            <\/li>\r\n            <li>\r\n                Where they arrived out of phase, they would weaken\r\n                or cancel one another.\r\n            <\/li>\r\n        <\/ul>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-chart-area\"><\/i>\r\n            An <strong>interference pattern<\/strong> of alternating\r\n            bright and dark bands would appear on the screen.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-atom\"><\/i>\r\n            One Quantum Object at a Time\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            We reduce the intensity until only one electron or photon\r\n            is present within the apparatus at a time.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Each arrival is recorded at one particular point\r\n            on the screen.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            It does not appear as a spread-out stain; it leaves\r\n            a localised trace.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            At first, the points appear random.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            As we repeat the experiment many times, however,\r\n            the individual points gradually form an interference pattern.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-point\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-bullseye\"><\/i>\r\n            Each event is localised.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-wave-square\"><\/i>\r\n            The multitude of events reveals wave-like interference.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-project-diagram\"><\/i>\r\n            What Interferes with What?\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Quantum Physics does not simply add the probability\r\n            of the first route to the probability of the second.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            When the two routes cannot be distinguished, it first\r\n            adds the probability amplitudes:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\" style=\"text-align:center;\">\r\n            <strong>\u03c8 = \u03c8\u2081 + \u03c8\u2082<\/strong>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            and then calculates the probability:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\" style=\"text-align:center;\">\r\n            <strong>P = |\u03c8\u2081 + \u03c8\u2082|\u00b2<\/strong>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The square contains interference terms.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-point\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-lightbulb\"><\/i>\r\n            The probability with both slits open is therefore not\r\n            merely the sum of the probabilities obtained by opening\r\n            each slit separately.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-route\"><\/i>\r\n            Which Slit Did It Pass Through?\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            If we add a detector that reliably records which slit\r\n            the quantum object passed through, we acquire path\r\n            information \u2014 but the interference pattern disappears.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-eye-slash\"><\/i>\r\n            This is not because a human being has learned the answer.\r\n            Neither consciousness nor a human gaze is required.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The physical interaction that makes the routes\r\n            distinguishable changes the quantum state and destroys\r\n            the coherence required for interference.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            If no path measurement is performed, we are not entitled\r\n            to imagine that the particle secretly possessed one\r\n            ordinary, definite classical trajectory.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The theory includes the amplitudes of both\r\n            indistinguishable alternatives.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Different interpretations of Quantum Mechanics offer\r\n            different accounts of what this means for underlying\r\n            reality.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-point\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-flask\"><\/i>\r\n            The experimental result, however, remains unchanged.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            <em>\r\n                The image is schematic and poetic. The curved lines\r\n                represent probability amplitudes; they are not\r\n                a photograph of material waves or predetermined\r\n                trajectories.\r\n            <\/em>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-point\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-brain\"><\/i>\r\n            <strong>Keep this in mind:<\/strong>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-exclamation-circle\"><\/i>\r\n            The double-slit experiment does not demonstrate that\r\n            human consciousness creates reality.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            It demonstrates something more rigorous and more strange:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            When alternative paths are indistinguishable, their\r\n            probability amplitudes interfere.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            When reliable path information exists, the interference\r\n            is lost.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The quantum object arrives as a single point.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-chart-area\"><\/i>\r\n            The law, however, reveals itself only through many points.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-landmark\"><\/i>\r\n            The Philosophical Bridge: The One and the Many\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            A single trace does not reveal the pattern.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Many traces are required for a form to appear that none\r\n            of them contains alone.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Ancient philosophers asked in different ways how the One\r\n            and the Many are related.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            They did not anticipate the double-slit experiment,\r\n            and Quantum Physics does not confirm any particular\r\n            ancient doctrine.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The experiment does, however, allow us to hear\r\n            the question again:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-question-circle\"><\/i>\r\n            How does one unified form arise from a multitude\r\n            of individual events?\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Each point appears alone.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-feather-alt\"><\/i>\r\n            The whole remembers the interference.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-link\"><\/i>\r\n            The Poetic Bridge\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The double-slit experiment does not prove that human\r\n            life follows a hidden quantum design, nor that our\r\n            thoughts create reality.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            It does, however, offer us a fascinating image:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            A single dot on the screen does not reveal the overall\r\n            pattern.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            It appears isolated, random, perhaps even insignificant.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-chart-area\"><\/i>\r\n            Yet as the dots accumulate, something begins to emerge\r\n            that none of them could reveal alone.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            This is worth remembering when we judge an effort\r\n            by a single moment.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            One mistake does not reveal the full extent of\r\n            a child\u2019s ability.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            One failure does not describe the whole course\r\n            of a person\u2019s journey.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Nor is one success enough to explain everything\r\n            that prepared the way for it.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The individual event is real \u2014 but it is not always\r\n            the whole pattern.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-lightbulb\"><\/i>\r\n            Sometimes time, repetition and careful observation\r\n            are needed before we can see the form emerging from\r\n            many small arrivals.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            <small>\r\n                <strong>Scientific references:<\/strong>\r\n                The addition of probability amplitudes, the
