It is a quantum object\r\n            that cannot be fully contained within either\r\n            classical picture.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-palette\"><\/i>\r\n            Energy and Colour\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The energy of a photon is given by:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\" style=\"text-align:center;\">\r\n            <strong>E = h\u03bd<\/strong>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            where <strong>h<\/strong> is Planck\u2019s constant and\r\n            <strong>\u03bd<\/strong> is the frequency of the light.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            The higher the frequency, the greater the photon\u2019s energy.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Within the visible spectrum, different frequencies\r\n            correspond to different colours.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            A violet photon carries more energy than a red photon.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Brightness, however, does not depend only upon the\r\n            energy of each photon.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            It is also related to how many photons reach a surface\r\n            within a given time.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-point\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-lightbulb\"><\/i>\r\n            Colour is one thing.<br>\r\n            Light intensity is another.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-arrows-alt\"><\/i>\r\n            Momentum Without Rest Mass\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            A photon has no rest mass, yet it carries both energy\r\n            and momentum.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            For a photon in a vacuum:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\" style=\"text-align:center;\">\r\n            <strong>E = pc<\/strong>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p style=\"text-align:center;\">\r\n            and\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\" style=\"text-align:center;\">\r\n            <strong>p = h\/\u03bb<\/strong>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            where <strong>p<\/strong> is momentum and\r\n            <strong>\u03bb<\/strong> is wavelength.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Light can therefore exert pressure and transfer momentum\r\n            to material objects.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-feather-alt\"><\/i>\r\n            Although it may feel immaterial to us, light can\r\n            genuinely push matter.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-tachometer-alt\"><\/i>\r\n            Constant Speed\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            In a vacuum, light travels at:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\" style=\"text-align:center;\">\r\n            <strong>c = 299,792,458 m\/s<\/strong>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            All inertial observers measure the same local speed\r\n            of light in a vacuum, regardless of the motion\r\n            of the source.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            This is a foundation of Special Relativity.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            We cannot, however, construct a valid reference frame\r\n            travelling alongside a photon.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-point\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-clock\"><\/i>\r\n            The popular statement \u201ctime stops for the photon\u201d\r\n            must therefore not be interpreted as though we knew\r\n            what a photon \u201cexperiences.\u201d\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-eye-slash\"><\/i>\r\n            A photon possesses no clock, viewpoint or experience.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-adjust\"><\/i>\r\n            Polarisation: The Orientation of Light\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            A photon also carries polarisation information.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Polarisation is related to the orientation of the\r\n            electromagnetic field and may be measured in\r\n            different bases.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            An individual photon can exist in a superposition\r\n            of polarisation states.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            When measured, one of the allowed outcomes appears\r\n            according to the probabilities predicted by its\r\n            quantum state.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-broadcast-tower\"><\/i>\r\n            Polarisation is used today in optics, communications\r\n            and quantum technologies.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-exchange-alt\"><\/i>\r\n            Emitted and Absorbed\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            A photon may be emitted when an atom or another\r\n            physical system loses energy.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            It may be absorbed when it transfers its energy\r\n            to another system.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            In an ordinary detection, the photon does not simply\r\n            arrive to have its picture taken.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            It interacts with matter and is often absorbed, leaving\r\n            a measurable electrical or energetic signal behind.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-fingerprint\"><\/i>\r\n            We know that it arrived from the trace it leaves.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-envelope\"><\/i>\r\n            Messenger of Electromagnetism\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            In Quantum Field Theory, the photon is the carrier\r\n            of the electromagnetic interaction.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Visible light, radio waves, microwaves, infrared\r\n            and ultraviolet radiation, X-rays and gamma rays\r\n            all belong to the same electromagnetic spectrum.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            They do not differ in whether they consist of photons.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-wave-square\"><\/i>\r\n            They differ in frequency and energy.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-section-title\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-link\"><\/i>\r\n            The Poetic Bridge\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Human beings associated light with knowledge, revelation,\r\n            truth and life long before they knew of the photon.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Physics does not prove these symbolic meanings.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            It does, however, reveal a reality that makes them\r\n            even more wondrous:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Whenever we observe a distant star, photons bring us\r\n            information about matter that may lie thousands\r\n            or millions of light-years away.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            Light does not understand the message it carries.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-star\"><\/i>\r\n            Yet through light, the distant becomes visible.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <hr class=\"qn-separator\">\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-point\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-brain\"><\/i>\r\n            <strong>Keep This in Mind:<\/strong>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-lightbulb\"><\/i>\r\n            <strong>\r\n                The photon does not possess a soul in the human\r\n                sense.<br>\r\n                It possesses a quantum identity: energy, momentum,\r\n                polarisation and an inseparable relationship with\r\n                the electromagnetic field.\r\n            <\/strong>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            If poetry wishes to call it a messenger, physics\r\n            need not object.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            It will merely add:\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p class=\"qn-highlight\">\r\n            <i class=\"fas fa-feather-alt\"><\/i>\r\n            <em>\r\n                A messenger without intention \u2014 but with\r\n                a measurable message.\r\n            <\/em>\r\n        <\/p>\r\n\r\n        <p>\r\n            <em>\r\n                Visual note: The multicoloured beam symbolises\r\n                the electromagnetic spectrum and the transmission\r\n                of light.
