Introduction<\/b><\/p>\n

There are words that were not written to be read, but to bind the soul.<\/p>\n

The Oath of the Filiki Eteria<\/i> is not merely a historical text.
It is a moment when speech becomes action, and the word acquires a weight greater than the life of the speaker.<\/p>\n

Here, one does not simply promise \u2014 one dedicates oneself.
One does not declare participation \u2014 one assumes responsibility.
One does not speak of freedom \u2014 one becomes its bearer.<\/p>\n

The oath does not require knowledge.
It requires character.<\/p>\n

And for this reason, it survives not only as a text, but as a measure of inner stance.<\/p>\n

We do not read it to memorize it.
We read it to ask:<\/p>\n

The Oath<\/b><\/p>\n

I swear, before the true God, of my own free will, that I shall remain faithful throughout my life to the Society in all things.<\/p>\n

I shall not reveal the slightest sign or word of it, nor shall I in any way give cause for others to suspect that I know anything concerning it \u2014 neither to relatives, nor to my confessor, nor to any friend.<\/p>\n

I swear that henceforth I shall not enter into any other society whatsoever, nor into any binding obligation; and if I have any such ties, I shall consider them null.<\/p>\n

I swear that I shall bear in my heart an unyielding hatred against the tyrants of my homeland, their followers, and those who share their views; and that I shall act in every possible way toward their harm and ultimate destruction, whenever circumstances allow.<\/p>\n

I swear never to use force in order to recognize a fellow member, and to exercise the greatest care not to err in this, lest I become the cause of any consequence.<\/p>\n

I swear to assist any fellow member wherever I may find him, with all my strength and means; to offer him respect and obedience if he is of higher rank; and even if he were once my enemy, to love and support him all the more.<\/p>\n

I swear that, just as I was received into the Society, so shall I receive another brother, employing every proper means and the prescribed caution, until I recognize him as a true Greek, a fervent defender of the homeland, a virtuous man, worthy not only to keep the secret, but to guide others of sound mind.<\/p>\n

I swear not to benefit in any way from the funds of the Society, considering them sacred and belonging to the entire nation; and likewise to guard carefully all letters sent and received.<\/p>\n

I swear never to question any member out of curiosity as to who initiated him into the Society; nor to reveal or give cause for another to understand who initiated me. I shall even feign ignorance if I recognize any sign.<\/p>\n

I swear always to conduct myself with virtue; to revere my religion without despising others; to set a good example; to support the weak, the unfortunate, and the poor; and to respect the laws, customs, and authorities of the land in which I reside.<\/p>\n

Finally, I swear to you, O sacred yet thrice-suffering homeland \u2014<\/b>
I swear by your long years of torment, by the bitter tears shed for centuries by your suffering children, by my own tears shed at this very moment, and by the future freedom of my fellow countrymen, that I dedicate myself entirely to you.<\/p>\n

From this moment, you shall be the cause and purpose of my thoughts.
Your name shall guide my actions, and your happiness shall be the reward of my labors.<\/p>\n

May divine justice strike me with all its thunderbolts,
may my name be detested,
and may I become an object of curse and condemnation among my compatriots,
if I should ever forget their suffering or fail in my duty.<\/p>\n

And may my death be the inevitable punishment of my sin,
