and if I have any such ties, I shall consider them null.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">I swear that I shall bear in my heart an unyielding hatred against the tyrants of my homeland, their followers, and those who share their views; and that I shall act in every possible way toward their harm and ultimate destruction, whenever circumstances allow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">I swear never to use force in order to recognize a fellow member, and to exercise the greatest care not to err in this, lest I become the cause of any consequence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">I swear to assist any fellow member wherever I may find him, with all my strength and means; to offer him respect and obedience if he is of higher rank; and even if he were once my enemy, to love and support him all the more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">I swear that, just as I was received into the Society, so shall I receive another brother, employing every proper means and the prescribed caution, until I recognize him as a true Greek, a fervent defender of the homeland, a virtuous man, worthy not only to keep the secret, but to guide others of sound mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">I swear not to benefit in any way from the funds of the Society, considering them sacred and belonging to the entire nation; and likewise to guard carefully all letters sent and received.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">I swear never to question any member out of curiosity as to who initiated him into the Society; nor to reveal or give cause for another to understand who initiated me. I shall even feign ignorance if I recognize any sign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">I swear always to conduct myself with virtue; to revere my religion without despising others; to set a good example; to support the weak, the unfortunate, and the poor; and to respect the laws, customs, and authorities of the land in which I reside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>Finally, I swear to you, O sacred yet thrice-suffering homeland \u2014<\/b><br \/>I swear by your long years of torment, by the bitter tears shed for centuries by your suffering children, by my own tears shed at this very moment, and by the future freedom of my fellow countrymen, that I dedicate myself entirely to you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">From this moment, you shall be the cause and purpose of my thoughts.<br \/>Your name shall guide my actions, and your happiness shall be the reward of my labors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">May divine justice strike me with all its thunderbolts,<br \/>may my name be detested,<br \/>and may I become an object of curse and condemnation among my compatriots,<br \/>if I should ever forget their suffering or fail in my duty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">And may my death be the inevitable punishment of my sin,<br \/>so that I may not defile the purity of the Society by my participation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Introduction There are words that were not written to be read, but to bind the soul.
