A door is open or closed. A coin shows heads or tails.<\/p>\n    <p>In the quantum world, however, before a measurement, a system may be described by a combination of several possible states. We call this combination a <strong>superposition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n    <p>This does not simply mean that we are unaware of which state the system has already chosen. Quantum theory combines the possible states through mathematical probability amplitudes, which can interfere with one another and produce effects that could not arise from mere ignorance.<\/p>\n    <p>When a measurement is performed, one particular outcome is recorded. No human being needs to be watching, and human consciousness does not need to intervene. Measurement is a physical interaction between the quantum system and an apparatus or its environment.<\/p>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <section class=\"section\">\n    <h3>Schr\u00f6dinger\u2019s cat<\/h3>\n    <p>Erwin Schr\u00f6dinger imagined a cat enclosed in a box, with its fate linked to a quantum event. If we extended the quantum description without restriction into the everyday world, we would be led to describe the cat as a superposition of \u201calive\u201d and \u201cdead.\u201d<\/p>\n    <p>Schr\u00f6dinger was not proposing that real cats are literally alive and dead at the same time. He devised this thought experiment to reveal how strange\u2014and problematic\u2014the idea of superposition becomes when transferred from the microscopic to the macroscopic world.<\/p>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <section class=\"section remember\">\n    <h3>Keep this in mind<\/h3>\n    <p>Superposition does not mean that \u201ceverything happens exactly as we imagine it.\u201d It means that, before measurement, the fullest quantum description may contain more than one possible outcome.<\/p>\n    <p>Measurement is not a gaze that magically creates reality. It is the point at which possibilities meet a physical interaction and we record a particular event.<\/p>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <section class=\"section\">\n    <h3>Echo from the Ancients<\/h3>\n    <p>Parmenides searched for Being beyond the uncertainty of the senses. Quantum Physics neither repeats his philosophy nor confirms it scientifically. In its own way, however, it reminds us that what we perceive directly does not necessarily exhaust reality.<\/p>\n    <div class=\"pair\">\n      Our senses present us with a world of things.<br>\n      Theory reveals to us a world of possibilities.\n    <\/div>\n    <p>And knowledge begins when we do not confuse what we see with all that may exist.<\/p>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <section class=\"section bridge\">\n    <h3>The Poetic Bridge<\/h3>\n    <p>Quantum superposition does not mean that, in human life, all our choices occur simultaneously. Nor does it mean that our thoughts or wishes can magically turn one possibility into reality.<\/p>\n    <p>We may, however, borrow a careful image from superposition:<\/p>\n    <p><strong>Before the facts have spoken, there may be more than one possibility worthy of consideration.<\/strong><\/p>\n    <p>We often rush to close a question because uncertainty makes us uncomfortable. Yet the ability to keep several possibilities open for a while is not always indecision.<\/p>\n    <p>It may be patience of thought.<\/p>\n    <p>Not every possibility will become real.
