And here the Argives said something that made the other Greeks raise an eyebrow: that Phoroneus was the first human being. Her name was <strong>Io<\/strong>. And Io served at the great sanctuary of the land: she was a priestess of Hera, queen of the gods \u2014 the goddess of Argos itself, whose Heraion crowned the plain like a diadem.<sup>*4<\/sup><\/p>\r\n          <p class=\"myth-emphasis\">A girl of the river, in the service of the most jealous goddess in the universe.<\/p>\r\n          <p>When fate intends to write a great story, it chooses the stage first, and carefully.<\/p>\r\n          <p>Because someone had noticed her. From very high up. Zeus \u2014 the husband of the very goddess Io served \u2014 began lowering his gaze toward Argos rather more often than the weather required.<\/p>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n\r\n      <div class=\"myth-dream\">\r\n        <span class=\"myth-dream__moon\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u263e<\/span>\r\n        <p>And the girl, they said, began to dream: soft voices, night after night, calling her out to the meadows of Lerna where her father's herds grazed.<\/p>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n\r\n      <p>Inachus, father and river, grew uneasy \u2014 running water reads the clouds before anyone else does.
