Delphic Maxims

The so-called Delphic Maxims are not merely ancient sayings. They are compressed forms of wisdom — thought distilled into language that endures.

They do not argue.
They do not instruct.
They point.

Each phrase is an invitation:

  • to turn inward (know thyself),
  • to find balance (nothing in excess),
  • to think with clarity (be sober and remember to question).

In the Plane-Tree School, we do not treat them as lines to memorize, but as seeds of thought.

They are not meant to be remembered.
They are meant to be lived.

  • «Γνῶθι σαυτόν.»
    • Insight: Know yourself. This is not mere introspection; it is the awareness of how you think, speak, and react. Self-knowledge is the bedrock of all learning and responsible freedom.
  • «Μηδὲν ἄγαν.»
    • Insight: Nothing in excess. Power lies in balance. Even “good” becomes distorted when it turns into an extreme. Measure is the rhythm of the universe.
  • «Νήφε καὶ μέμνησο ἀπιστεῖν.» (Epicharmus)
    • Insight: Be sober and remember to be skeptical. Critical thinking requires a clear mind. Do not accept anything without processing it, not even your own first impressions.
  • «Φείδου χρόνου.»
    • Insight: Be thrifty with your time. Time is the only thing that never returns. To be “thrifty” means not wasting life on trivialities but investing it in what gives existence meaning.
  • «Ἕπου θεῷ.»
  • English Insight: Follow the Divine / Align with the Universal Logic. Do not fight the natural flow of the universe. By aligning yourself with cosmic order and reason, your actions gain depth and effortless power.
  • «Πέρας ἐπιτέλει μὴ ἀποδειλιῶν.»
  • English Insight: Finish your goal without flinching. Starting is important, but completion defines character. Do not let fear or fatigue halt your progress midway. Persistence is the hallmark of those who truly succeed.
  • «Σαυτὸν ἴσθι.»
  • English Insight: Be conscious of yourself. A step beyond self-knowledge; it is about self-awareness in the present moment. Know your limits, your strengths, and your worth as you navigate through life.
  • «Σοφίαν ζήτει.»
  • English Insight: Seek wisdom. Knowledge is mere information; wisdom is the art of applying it correctly. Never cease to be a student. Wisdom is earned through observation, experience, and deep reflection.
  • «Φίλοις βοηθεῖ.»
  • English Insight: Help your friends. Friendship is a sacred bond. Actively supporting those close to us is not just a duty, but a moral necessity that strengthens both the community and our inner selves.
