Psi

Το Ψ (Psi) — explained in English

Psi is the 23rd letter of the Greek alphabet.
In English, it survives in two parallel ways: sound and idea.

1️ Sound (phonetics)

  • Ψ = /ps/, a compound sound (p + s).
  • English keeps the letter but silences the sound at the beginning of words:

Greek

English

What happens

ψυχή

psyche

p is silent

ψυχολογία

psychology

same

ψαλμός

psalm

same

This is rare and important:
English respects the Greek form, even when it no longer pronounces it.

👉 That alone tells you something about authority and origin.

2 Meaning (concept)

In English, Psi is inseparable from the idea of the soul/mind:

  • psychology
  • psychiatry
  • psychoanalysis
  • psychic
  • psychosomatic

Even when English speakers don’t know Greek,
they think with Greek categories when they speak about the mind.

In short:
Ψ is not just a letter — it is a conceptual gateway.

3 Shape (symbol)

The shape of Ψ — one stem, two rising arms — has long been read as:

  • the body rooted in matter,
  • the soul opening upward,
  • inner life branching into awareness.

This is why Ψ became the international symbol of psychology.

No accident. No decoration.
