Quantum Entanglement

Quantum Nugget #6 — Quantum Entanglement

Quantum entanglement

Term of the Day

Quantum entanglement
Greek: Κβαντική εμπλοκή

Imagine two photons created in such a way that Quantum Physics cannot fully describe each one separately.

It describes the pair as a single quantum system.

This is called quantum entanglement.

Entanglement does not mean that one photon feels what is happening to the other.

There is no hidden thread, telepathy or secret signal travelling between them.

It means that, when we perform measurements on the two parts of the pair, the results display correlations that classical physics cannot explain through pre-existing local “hidden instructions.”

How Does It Work?

Suppose that two entangled photons move apart. Each individual measurement result is unpredictable.

When, however, we later compare many results from both sides, the quantum pattern of correlations appears.

Measuring one photon does not allow us to choose the result obtained from the other.

Entanglement therefore cannot be used to send a message faster than light.

To recognise the correlations, the two observers must compare their data through an ordinary means of communication, which obeys the speed-of-light limit.

Distance may separate the particles without necessarily erasing their correlations.

Entanglement, however, is not necessarily eternal. Uncontrolled interactions with the environment may weaken or destroy it.

The luminous line in the image is a poetic symbol. It does not represent a real thread or signal between the photons.

Keep this in mind:

In entanglement, the parts of a quantum system may not possess complete, independent descriptions. The fullest description belongs to the whole.

This does not abolish distance.

It does not violate the speed of light.

It does, however, reveal that quantum correlations are deeper than our classical intuition allows.

The Orphic Bridge

The Orphic imagination sees the many forms of life emerging within a single sacred cosmos.

Quantum Entanglement does not prove this worldview, nor did the Orphic tradition anticipate Quantum Physics.

We may, however, allow the two voices to meet poetically — without confusing them:

One speaks of a universe in which the parts acquire meaning through the whole.

The other sings of a world in which no existence is devoid of relationship.

The Poetic Bridge

Quantum entanglement does not prove that human relationships are quantum phenomena.

It does not explain love, confirm telepathy or allow two people to exchange secret messages across a distance.

We may, however, borrow a clear image from it:

Some truths do not belong entirely to either part in isolation. They belong to the relationship between them.

A friendship does not exist in one friend alone or in the other.

A dialogue belongs exclusively to neither of its two voices.

A melody played by two instruments is not contained in its entirety within either one.

To understand what happens between two people, it is not always enough to examine each person separately.

We must also notice the pattern they create together: what they offer, what they receive and how each changes in the presence of the other.

A relationship does not abolish individuality.

It does, however, remind us that some things belong to one person, some to the other — and some are born only in the space between them.
